Long, long ago in Ancient Greece, Hera the Queen of Mount Olympus was in a really bad mood. Her servant Echo was talking too much and this made Hera very angry.

Hera decided to punish Echo. “From this day forth you will only be able to repeat the words that others say.” Hera proclaimed.

Poor Echo. In the marketplace, if a seller called out, “Fresh strawberries.” Echo had to repeat, “Fresh strawberries.”

Echo was in love with the very handsome Narcissus. She wanted to tell him how much she loved him but she was too shy.

One day, she saw Narcissus admiring at his reflection in the pond. Narcissus looked at his reflection, turning this way and that in the middle of the day.

Taking a long look at his reflection, Narcissus said out loud, “I love you.” Echo repeated the words back. “I love you.” She said.

Narcissus thought his own reflection had spoken back to him. He stood staring into the clear water, amazed by his own reflection and thoughts of his own beauty.

Narcissus could not move; he could do nothing but gaze upon himself in the water until he died. Then Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, who guided dead souls to The Land of the Dead, led him away.

Echo loved him so much that she too faded away. All that was left of her was her voice, which can still be heard in certain hollow places, repeating the words of others.
