Baba Yaga and Beautiful Vasilisa
Page 1
Long ago, there was a beautiful girl named Vasilisa. Her mother had died when Vasilisa was very young. But before she died, she gave Vasilisa a gift.
Page 2
Vasilisa’s mother gave her an enchanted doll. She told Vasilisa, “This doll has a blessing. It will help you if you give it a little food.”
Page 3
After Vasilisa’s mother died, her father married another woman. But Vasilisa’s stepmother was wicked and jealous because Vasilisa was so beautiful.
Page 4
One day, Vasilisa’s father had to go to another town to work. That night, Vasilisa’s wicked stepmother told Vasilisa to go into the forest to find a light.
Page 5
Vasilisa took her blessed doll and went into the forest to look for a light. Deep in the forest, she found a strange house that stood on two chicken legs.
Page 6
Suddenly, an old woman appeared. She was the witch, Baba Yaga! She asked, “What do you want?” Vasilisa said, “I am looking for a light for my house.”
Page 7
Baba Yaga said to Vasilisa, “I will give you a light, if you work for me. But if you do not do all of the work, I will eat you!”
Page 8
Baba Yaga said, “Go to the barn. There is corn. You must separate the good yellow corn from the bad black corn. You must finish before the sun comes up.”
Page 9
Vasilisa went to the barn. When she saw the corn, she began to cry. There was so much corn! Vasilisa knew that she could not finish before sunrise.”

Vasilisa gave a piece of bread to her blessed doll. The doll said, “Do not worry. I can help.” And the doll began to separate the good corn from the bad.

The next morning, Baba Yaga came to the barn. She was very surprised to see that all the corn had been separated.
Page 12
Baba Yaga said to Vasilisa, “How did you finish this task? Tell the truth! If you lie to me, I will eat you!” So, Vasilisa told Baba Yaga about her blessed doll.
Page 13
Baba Yaga said, “Go now. I do not want blessed things in my house. And give this light to your stepmother.” She gave Vasilisa a skull with glowing eyes.
Page 14
Vasilisa went home. When she showed the skull to her stepmother, the skull’s glowing eyes burned the wicked woman up!
Page 15
Because the wicked stepmother was no more, Vasilisa and her father lived long and happy lives.
