Respect

It was a beautiful day. The sun was high in a blue, blue sky. Two women were paddling their canoe on a lake. The water was calm and clear.

“This is Leech Lake,” said the first woman. “We must pay our respects to Leech.” She was wearing many beautiful beads around her neck, wrists and ankles.
Page 3
She took them all off. “Thank you for sharing your lake with us,” she said again and again. Each time she said it, she put some beads in the water.
Page 4
The second woman laughed. She said, “I am not going to put my beautiful beads in the lake. They took me so long to make. “I want to keep my beads. I do not need to pay respect to some ugly, little Leech.”
Page 5
Suddenly, the two women saw a giant leech. It was two feet long. It was swimming towards them at great speed.
Page 6
The second woman was terrified. She tried to take off her beads and quickly throw them in the lake. But it was too late.
Page 7
Leech bumped into the canoe and knocked the woman into the lake.
Page 8
It wrapped itself around her and took her to the bottom.

That is why the Native People have respect for all living things.
