Many years ago, there lived a farmer. He worked very hard, and he became rich. But he was not very smart.

One day, the farmer said to his friend, “I want to go to university.” The friend played a joke on the farmer. He said, “You should not go to university. You are too important.”
Page 3
The friend said to the farmer, “You should send your ox to university. At the university in Leiden, animals learn so much that they turn into people!”

The farmer took his ox to Leiden. He met a student at the university. He asked, “Are you a teacher?” The student lied. He said, “Yes.”

The farmer said, “I will give 100 gold coins if you teach my ox and turn him into a person.” The student was surprised, but he said, “OK. I will teach your ox.”
Page 6
A year later, the farmer went to Leiden to check on the ox’s progress. The student met the farmer and said, “Your ox is learning a lot. But we need 100 gold coins to continue.”

The farmer was a little bit upset. He did not want to pay another 100 gold coins. But he was proud that his ox was learning so much, so he gave the coins to the student.
