Once upon a time, there was a rich merchant. He had a beautiful daughter named Rosa.
Page 2
One day, when the merchant was returning from the market, he saw a house. There were three roses in the garden. So, the merchant took one to give to Rosa.
Page 3
When the merchant had plucked the rose, a snake appeared. The snake was angry. It said, “You have stolen that rose from me! Now, you must do what I say!”

The snake said, “I know that you have a daughter. Bring her to me. If you do not bring her to me, I will kill you!”

The merchant went to his house. He said to Rosa, “The snake told me to take you to him, or I will die. But I would rather die than to send you to a snake!”

Rosa smiled bravely. She said to her father, “You are a good man. I will go to the snake so that we both may live.”

Rosa went to the snake’s house. She spent many months there. The snake was always very kind to Rosa.
