The Wonder-working Lock
Page 1
Once upon a time, there lived a kind man. He was very poor. Every day, he would gather sticks. Then, he would sell them to get bread.

One day when he was returning from selling the sticks, he saw some shepherds. They were about to kill a puppy and a kitten. He gave the shepherds his bread for the animals.

The next day, he saw the shepherds again when he was going home. They were going to kill a small snake. The man bought the snake with his bread.

The snake said, “Return me to my parents. They will try to pay you with gold, but you should only ask for the lock behind their door.”

The man took the snake to her parents. When they tried to give him gold, he asked for the lock. The snakes were happy to have their daughter back, so they gave him the lock.

The lock was special; it could work wonders. When the man knocked on it, any wish he made would come true. He wished for a castle, and it appeared!

The man wished to marry the king’s daughter. The king saw the man’s great castle, and he let the man marry his daughter.

There was a great wedding party, and many people came from around the world. The King of the Sea came. He recognized the wonder-working lock, and he stole it!

With the wonder-working lock, the King of the Sea took the man’s new wife, and he took his castle. The King of the Sea moved the castle to the middle of the sea.

When the man realized that the wonder-working lock was gone, he began to cry. The puppy and the kitten that he had saved were now grown. They wanted to help the man.
