Ancient Egyptians lived mostly around the Nile River. They lived between the years 3500 BC and 30 BC. That means that their society began about 5500 years ago!

The Ancient Egyptians were very smart. They invented new kinds of math and astronomy. They also were very good doctors.

The Ancient Egyptians are famous for building pyramids. The Pyramid of Giza is the biggest. It is 147 meters tall or as tall as a 40-story building. It is made of about 2 million rocks and each rock weighs as much as an elephant.

A tomb is a place to bury people when they die. We believe that the Pyramid of Giza is a tomb for a Pharaoh named Khufu. In Ancient Egypt, the kings and queens were called Pharaohs.

About 4000 years ago the Ancient Egyptians built a giant statue. The statue has the body of a lion and the face of a human. We call it the Sphinx of Giza. It is 20 meters tall and 73 meters long.

In Ancient Egypt, women and men wore make-up. Ancient Egyptians believed make-up was magical, and they thought it protected them from evil gods and bad luck. It protected them from the sun, too!

The Ancient Egyptian calendar was a lot like ours. One year had 365 days and 12 months.

The Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. When a person died, the priests turned the person into a mummy. Then, the mummy was buried with gold and tools to help in the afterlife.

The Ancient Egyptians used pictures to write words. These pictures are called hieroglyphics. The Ancient Egyptians also invented a kind of paper. The paper is called papyrus.

Horus was an Egyptian god. He was the god of the sun, the sky, and the Pharaohs. He had a man’s body, and a falcon’s head. Horus protected all of Egypt.

Ancient Egyptians believed the Eye of Horus protected them. Sailors would paint the Eye of Horus on their ships for protection.

Anubis was the Egyptian god of death. He had the body of a man, and the head of a jackal. If a person was good, Anubis would help that person in the afterlife.
