Once there was an old man who lived in a small, noisy house. Every day he wished that his house were bigger and quieter. One day he went to the Wise Woman and told her about his wish.

"My house is so small and noisy," said the man. "I want a big, quiet house." The Wise Woman listened carefully and said, "I can help you, but you must do exactly as I say."

“Get a chicken.” Said the Wise Woman. “A chicken?” said the man. “Yes, a chicken, some sheep, a horse, and some cows,” said the Wise Woman, “and put them all inside your house.” “How silly!” thought the man and he went home.

When he got back to his small, noisy house, he thought about the wise woman’s words one more time and decided to try it.

He went outside and got a chicken and some sheep. Then he went to market and bought a horse and some cows.

Then he put all the animals into his house. The animals filled his house. He could not move in the house anymore.

His house was already so small and now there was no room in it at all. And the noise was deafening.

The next day, he went back to the Wise Woman. “Why did you do this to me?” he asked her, “Things got worse than ever! There is no room in my house at all. And I cannot sleep through the terrible noise of the animals.” “I understand,” said the Wise Woman. “Go back to your house and take all the animals out.”

So the man went back to his house and let all the animals out. The animals ran quickly out of the open door, almost knocking the old man over.

The old man sat down in his favorite chair. He was amazed as he looked around. Suddenly his house seemed so much bigger. He listened, but he could not hear anything; it was quiet now too. He had a big, quiet house!
