One hot day, a hunter saw a snake trapped under a big stone. “Please help me lift the stone,” called the snake. “I cannot help you,” said the hunter. “If I lift the stone you will eat me. “I promise I will not eat you if you help me,” said the snake. So the hunter bent down and with all his strength he lifted the stone off the snake. Immediately the snake pulled back its head to attack him.

The hunter jumped back. “You promised not to eat me if I helped you,” said the hunter. “Hunger is hunger,” said the snake. “A promise is a promise,” said the hunter. “Let’s go and ask others to judge. ”They went into the woods and soon met a hound. The hunter asked him if the snake should eat him. The hound said, “I caught many hares for my owner. He could eat the finest meat every day, but now I am old and cannot even catch a tortoise so he wants to kill me. Since I have not been rewarded for my work I think the snake should eat you.”

“You have heard the judgment,” said the snake. “I have heard,” said the hunter, “but let’s hear three judgment.” So they went on into the woods. The snake agreed. Soon, they met a horse. “I had a master who fed me well when I could travel far and carry him on my back. Now I am old and he gives me nothing. I think the snake should eat you,” said the horse. “That is two judgments that I should eat you,” said the snake.

“Let’s hear one more judgment,” said the hunter. On they went until they met a fox. “Dear fox,” said the hunter, “I saved this snake’s life and in return he promised not to eat me. But now he says he is hungry and he is going back on his promise. What do you think?” “To make a good judgment I would have to see the situation,” said the fox. So they all went back to the place where the hunter had lifted the stone.

The snake went to the exact spot where he had been. As the fox watched, the hunter lifted the heavy stone. He put it down on the snake, as it had been when in the beginning. “Is this exactly how you were before the hunter helped you?” asked the fox. “Yes, this is exactly how it was,” replied the snake. “Good, then you shall stay there for the rest of your days,” said the fox. “That is my judgment.” The hunter and the fox went back into the woods leaving the snake under the heavy stone.
