One hot day, a hunter sees a snake trapped under a big stone. “Please help me lift the stone,” calls the snake. “I cannot help you,” said the hunter. “If I lift the stone you will eat me.”

“ I promise I will not eat you if you will help me,” said the snake. So the hunter bent down and with all his strength he lifted the stone off the snake. Immediately the snake pulled back its head to attack him.

The hunter jumped back. “ You promised not to eat me if I helped you,” said the hunter. “ Hunger is hunger,” said the snake. “ A promise is a promise,” said the hunter. “Let’s go and ask others to judge.”

They went into the woods and soon met a hound. The hunter asked him if the snake should eat him. The hound said, “ I caught many hares for my owner. He could eat the finest meat every day, but now I am old and cannot even catch a tortoise so he wants to kill me. Since I have not been rewarded for my goodness I think the snake should eat you.”

“ You have heard the judgement,” said the snake. “ I have heard,” said the hunter, “ but let’s hear three judgements.” So they went on into the woods. The snake agreed.

Soon, they met a horse. “ I had a master who fed me well when I could travel far and carry him on my back, but now I am old he gives me nothing. I think the snake should eat you,” said the horse. “That is two judgements that I should eat you,” said the snake.

“Let’s hear one more judgement,” said the hunter. So on they went until they met a fox. “Dear fox,” said the hunter, “ I saved this snake’s life and in return he promised not to eat me, but now he says he is hungry and he is going back on his promise. What do you think?”
