Eva's Luck
Page 1
There once was a girl called Eva Sauvet. She was a happy child with dark eyes and long raven hair.
Page 2
One day, she was skipping happily along the road when she saw a snake. It was a big snake with rectangle markings in yellow and blue. Eva looked at the snake and the snake looked at her. Eva was afraid and she ran away.

“ Mama, Mama,” she cried, running into the house, “ I saw a snake.” “What kind of snake?” asked Eva’s mother. “ Did it have rectangle markings?” “ Yes,” said Eva, “blue and yellow.” “If you see it again you must give it your handkerchief.” Eva’s mother said.

The very next day Eva was walking along the road again. Her heart was beating wildly, she was so afraid she would see the snake again. Then it slithered onto the road in front of her. Eva was too afraid to move.
Page 5
Eva looked at the snake and the snake looked at Eva. Then she came to her senses and remembered what her mother said about the handkerchief and she threw her small, white handkerchief down in front of the snake.
Page 6
The snake’s eyes gleamed brightly and he showed his fangs. Then with a hiss of his long tongue, he picked up the handkerchief and slithered away. Not thinking clearly, Eva ran after him.

The snake came to some old ruins. Eva caught up with the snake. Eva watched the snake come to a hole in the ruins and disappear inside.
Page 8
Eva ran home and told her mother. The next day Eva’s father and some other men went to thee ruins to look for the snake. Eva showed them the hole where it had disappeared.
Page 9
The men lit a fire at the hole and the smoke from the fire billowed into the hole. Very soon the snake slithered out and the men were waiting to kill it. They beat it with sticks on the smooth stones of the ruins.

Then they dug out the hole and went inside. There they found Eva’s handkerchief in a pile of handkerchiefs. Looking further, they came upon a big pile of gold. The men and Eva danced and sang with joy.
