Once upon a time there lived a poor farmer, his wife and their three lovely daughters. One day, the farmer came home from the fields. It was a hot day and he was very thirsty. He sent his eldest daughter to the well for a bucket of water. Off she went. When she got to the well, she sat down in the shade of a big tree and began daydreaming.

“One day I will marry and my husband and I will have a beautiful son. We will call him Kikos, after his grandfather. One day Kikos will come to this well and climb this tree and fall into the well. Poor little Kikos will drown”. Thinking this, the eldest daughter cried and cried with grief for her lost little boy. Back at home, the farmer, who was still thirsty, wondered where his eldest daughter was. So he sent his second daughter to the well to find her. When the second daughter saw her sister crying at the well, she said, “What is the matter? What happened?”

“My sister, auntie to dear Kikos. I will have a son, a beautiful son called Kikos. One day he will come to this well and fall from this tree and drown.” And then she cried and cried. The second daughter was so sad, she too cried and cried. Now the farmer is beginning to worry. Two daughters have not returned from the well. He sent his third daughter to find them. The third daughter arrived at the well to see both her sisters crying. “What is the matter? What happened?” asked the third daughter.

“Oh sister, our nephew, a beautiful boy called Kikos, will come to this well. He will climb this tree and fall into the well and drown,” wailed the second daughter. “Oh no! It cannot be true,” said the third sister and she too cried and cried. When none of the daughters returned home, their mother went to find them. She found them by the well. Their eyes were red from crying. “My daughters, my beautiful daughters, what is the matter? What happened?” she asked. “Our dear mother,” said the third daughter, still crying. “Our nephew, your favorite grandchild, a beautiful boy called Kikos, will come to this well. He will climb this tree and fall into the well and drown.” “Oh no!” cried the mother. “Tell me it is not true. My precious grandson drowned?” With that, the four women cried together at the well.

The farmer was worried now, so he went to the well. He was surprised to find his wife and three daughters all crying there. “What is the matter? What happened?” he asked. “Our beautiful grandson, Kikos, will come to this well and climb this tree and fall into the well and drown,” his wife said. “So, let’s go home and invite all our friends and neighbors to a feast. Let us all eat together to remember our lost little Kikos. Then Kikos will live on in everyone’s memory. So the women stopped crying. They went home and had a great feast.
