Once upon a time, there was a woman named Maria. She was very beautiful. But, she was selfish. She only loved herself and her own beauty.

One day, she said to her mother, “I will only marry the most handsome man. And he must be rich, too. And his family must be very powerful.”

One day, a wealthy young man named Ricardo came to the town. He was strong and handsome. And his family was famous in Mexico.

Maria saw Ricardo. She said, “That man is good enough for me. I will let him marry me. Then, I will be in a rich and powerful family.”

Maria and Ricardo were soon married. At first, they were happy together. They had two children. Ricardo loved his children. But Maria still loved only herself.

Because Maria did not love him, Ricardo spent more and more time away from her. He would spend time with his his children, but not with Maria.

One evening, Maria was walking with her children by a river. Then, she saw Ricardo talking to another woman. Maria became angry.

In her anger, Maria threw her children into the river! When she saw what she had done, she tried to save them. But they had already drowned.

That night, Maria died there by the river. The people of the town found her. They wrapped her in a white robe, and they buried her.

Maria’s ghost still walks. She looks for children to take away, to make them her own. She cries at night when the wind blows. And people call her La Llorona.
