Once upon a time, there was a poor man who had a beautiful daughter. One day, the man met the king. He said to the king, “My daughter can turn straw into gold!”

The king wanted to marry the girl because he was greedy. But first, he had to test her. He put her in a room with a spinning wheel and a big pile of straw.

The king said to the girl, “You have to turn all of this straw into gold by tomorrow morning.” Then, he went out of the room, and he locked the girl inside.

The girl sat down, and she began to cry. She did not really know how to turn straw into gold. Her father had lied! She did not know what to do.

Suddenly, a little man appeared. He said, “I can turn this straw into gold. But you have to pay me first. What can you give to me?”

The girl said, “I can give my necklace to you.” The little man took the necklace, but he said, “That is not enough!”

The girl said, “I can give my ring to you.” The little man took the ring, but he said, “That is not enough! I want more!”

The girl asked the little man, “What can I give to you?” He said, “After you marry the king, I want your baby. Give your baby to me, and I will turn the straw into gold.”

The girl promised to give her baby to the little man. Then, the little man began to work. He began to turn the straw into gold!

The little man worked all night. He worked and worked. As he worked, he sang a song. “I will turn this straw into golden twine. Then, your baby will be mine!”

When the greedy king saw the gold, he was very happy. He said, “I will marry you because you turned the straw into gold.” The next day, the girl married the king.

One day, the girl had a baby. Suddenly, the little man appeared. He said, “I want this baby! But if you guess my name, you can keep your baby. You have three days.”
Page 13
The girl thought, “The little man must have a very strange name. I cannot imagine what his name might be.”

The girl asked the king’s guard for help. She said, “Go into the woods. Find the little man, and try to learn his name.” So the king’s guard went into the woods.
