Long ago, Sudika-Mbambi was born. He was destined to be a great warrior. He was born with his knife and his spear in hand. He also had his kilembe -- his life-tree. He gave the kilembe to his mother, and she planted it behind their house.

Soon after Sudika-Mbambi entered the world, his brother, Kabundungulu, was born. Kabundungulu was also very strong. Sudika-Mbambi said to Kabundungulu, “I am going to fight demons. Stay here to protect our mother and my kilembe.”

On the road to the Land of Demons, Sudika-Mbambi met four men. Each man bragged about his great power, so Sudika-Mbambi invited them to join him. They all traveled to the Land of Demons together.

Outside the Land of Demons, Sudika-Mbambi built a house. Then, he took three companions, and they went to fight the demons. Sudika-Mbambi told the fourth man to stay and guard the house.

While Sudika-Mbambi was fighting demons, an old woman came to the house. She said to the guard, “If you can beat me in a fight, you can marry my granddaughter.” The guard fought the old woman, but she beat him. And she put him under a big rock.

Sudika-Mbambi came home, and he rescued the guard. Every day after that, Sudika-Mbambi left a different guard. And every day, that guard fought the old woman and lost. Finally, Sudika-Mbambi decided to guard the house himself.

The next day, Sudika-Mbambi’s companions went to fight the demons. While they were gone, the old woman came to the house again. She said to Sudika-Mbambi, “If you can beat me in a fight, you can marry my granddaughter.”
