The Deer And The Jaguar
Page 1
Once, there was a fine, big deer. He was walking along the banks of the river near the forest. He came to a good place in the forest. Deer said, “This looks like a good place. I will build my house here.” He walked on, thinking about a house.

Then, along came a jaguar. “Oh, I am walking and walking every day, I should make a house for myself,” said Jaguar. He came to the same place and thought, “This place looks good, I will make myself a house here.” He walked on thinking about his house.

The next day, Deer came back. He used his huge antlers to clear away trees and branches to make a space to build a house.” Then, he went on into the forest, thinking about his house.

Along came Jaguar. “Goodness,” said Jaguar. “The god, Tupan, has been helping. He has already cleared a space for me. What a blessing. I will make a floor.” Jaguar made a floor using his sharp claws. He went on into the jungle, thinking about his house.

When Deer came back and saw the floor, he said, “Goodness, the god, Tupan, has been helping me. What a blessing. I shall make some walls.” Deer made some walls and went on into the forest, thinking about his house.

Jaguar came back and saw the walls. He said, “I am so blessed! Tupan has built walls for me. I shall make a roof.” So, he made a fine roof.

The next day, Deer saw the house was almost finished. “I will make two rooms,” he said. “One for me and one for Tupan to thank him for his help.” When the rooms were finished, Deer went into his room and lay down to sleep.

When Jaguar came by and saw the two rooms he said, “What a blessing! Tupan has made two rooms, one for me and one for himself.” He went into the empty room and lay down to sleep.

The next morning when Deer and Jaguar woke up, they were very surprised to see each other there. “I am going hunting.” said Jaguar and left. He killed a deer and brought it back. Deer was very sad.

The next day, Deer said, "I am going hunting.” Deer went into the forest and found his friend, the anteater. He said "Please kill a jaguar for me.” The anteater killed a jaguar with his very sharp claws. Deer took it back to the house and laid it down in front of the fire. Jaguar was sad.

Deer and Jaguar could not sleep; they were afraid of each other. Deer rolled over and his big antlers banged against the wall. Jaguar thought Deer was coming for him. He let out a roar and ran away. Deer heard the roar and thought Jaguar was coming for him. So he ran away in the opposite direction.

Since that time Deer and Jaguar have not lived together.
