Once upon a time, there was a very honest and hardworking farmer. The Devil did not like the farmer’s goodness, so he sent an imp to torment the farmer.

The imp caused many days of bad weather. The farmer had to work very hard to keep his plants healthy. But the farmer always smiled.

One day, the imp said to the farmer, “This is my master’s land, so you must pay. I will take the bottom half of your crop. You can only have the top half.”

The farmer smiled. He told the imp, “I am planting wheat. Are you sure that you want the bottom half?” The imp said, “You cannot trick me! I will take the bottom.”

After the wheat was grown, the farmer took the top half, and the imp took the bottom half. The farmer and the imp went to the market.

The farmer sold all of his wheat at the market, but the imp sold nothing. Also, the people in the market laughed at the silly imp for trying to sell wheat roots.

When the farmer returned to the farm, he began to plant turnips. The imp said, “You cannot trick me again! Next time, I take the top!”

After the turnips were grown, the farmer took the bottom, and the imp took the top. The farmer and the imp went to the market again.

Again, the farmer sold everything, and the imp sold nothing. And again, all of the people laughed and pointed at the silly imp.

The imp became very angry. He said to the farmer, “You have tricked me two times. I will have no more business with you!” Then, the imp disappeared.
