Many years ago in France, a bridge builder lived in a small town near the Rhine River. The people in the town asked him to build a bridge for them.

The bridge builder began to build the bridge, But every day, there were many problems.

Some days, heavy rains would come and cause mudslides. The mudslides would knock down the bridge before it was finished.

On other days, the strong currents of the river would wash the bridge away. The bridge builder tried everything, but he could not finish the bridge.

Because the bridge builder could not finish the bridge, he became angry. He said, “I would give anything just to finish this bridge!” Then, the Devil appeared!

The Devil said, “I will help you. But the soul of the first living thing to cross the bridge shall be mine.” The bridge builder made a deal with the Devil!

The Devil sent an imp to help build the bridge. The imp was strong, and he used magic to stop the heavy rains and strong currents. Soon, the bridge was built.

After the bridge was finished, the imp waited at the far end. The bridge builder began to cross. The imp was happy. Soon, he would give a new soul to the Devil.

The bridge builder was almost across the bridge. He just needed to take one more step. The imp reached out to the bridge builder.

Suddenly, the bridge builder pushed a goat across the bridge. It was a trick; the imp had to give a goat to the Devil! He took the goat, and he angrily disappeared.
