Long ago, there was a god named Susano-o. But he could not live in Heaven. He had killed his sister’s maids, and he burned her rice fields. Susano-o’s sister was named Amaterasu. She was angry at Susano-o. She made him live on Earth.

On Earth, Susano-o met an old man. The old man was very sad. Susano-o asked the old man, “Why are you sad?” The old man said, “There is a giant snake. It has eight heads. The snake has eaten seven of my daughters. I think it will eat my last daughter soon.”

Susano-o said to the old man, “I will kill the giant snake.” Susano-o and the old man made a big wall. The wall had eight gates. Behind each gate, Susano-o put a big bucket. Each bucket was filled with rice wine.

At last, the giant snake came. It put its heads through the eight gates. Then, it drank the rice wine. Because the giant snake had drunk the rice wine, it was drunk. It could not move quickly. Some of the heads were sleeping!

Susano-o used his sword to kill the giant snake. He cut into each of the giant Susano-o found a magical sword inside the giant snake. He gave this sword to Amaterasu. After that, Susano-o was able to return to Heaven.
