The Monkey and the Grain
Page 1
One day, a monkey was walking through the forest. By the path, he saw a log with a hole in the top.
Page 2
The monkey looked into the hole. Inside, he saw some grains of wheat. The monkey thought, “I can eat this grain. I am very hungry!”
Page 3
The monkey squeezed his hand into the little hole. He stretched and stretched, and finally he was able to grab the grain. He scooped up as much as he could.
Page 4
The monkey tried to pull his hand out, but he could not. Because he was holding so much grain, his hand was too big to come out of the little hole.
Page 5
The monkey tried again and again to pull his hand out of the little hole. Conk! Conk! Conk! His hand hit the inside of the log.
Page 6
The monkey sat by the log and thought about his problem. How could he get the grain out of the log? He could drop some the grain, but he did not want to do that.
Page 7
The monkey turned his hand to the left. Then, he turned his hand to the right. Nothing he did worked. And he still would not drop any of the grain.
Page 8
It was getting later, and the monkey was getting hungrier and hungrier. But he did not want to let go of any of the grain.
Page 9
Finally, the monkey gave up. He said, “If I cannot have a lot of grain, I do not want any!” Then, he dropped all of the grain back into the log.
Page 10
The monkey walked away without any grain, and without learning a lesson: if you cannot have everything, then at least something is better than nothing.
