Every Christmas Eve, Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum threw a fantastic party at their big house. Their daughter, Marie, and their son, Fritz, always had a great time at the party.

Mr. Stahlbaum’s best friend was Mr. Drosselmeyer. He was a clock maker and a toy maker. He always brought wonderful gifts for Marie and Fritz.

This year, Mr. Drosselmeyer brought a toy castle for Fritz. When Fritz wound up the castle, the king and all the soldiers would move around.

Mr. Drosselmeyer gave Marie a Nutcracker. This Nutcracker was dressed like a general; his uniform was very handsome. Marie loved her Nutcracker.

Fritz got bored with his toy castle. He took Marie’s Nutcracker, and he began to break bigger and bigger nuts. Finally, CRACK! The Nutcracker’s jaw broke!

Marie wrapped the Nutcracker’s broken jaw with a ribbon from her dress. She said to him, “Tomorrow, Mr. Drosselmeyer will mend you.” The Nutcracker seemed to smile.

When it was time for bed, Marie asked if she could stay next to the Christmas tree with her Nutcracker. She sat with him near the tree. Soon, she began to feel sleepy.

The clock struck midnight, and Marie suddenly woke up. Coming from the walls, she saw an army of mice. Leading the army was the giant Mouse King!

The Nutcracker suddenly came to life. He began to give orders to the toy soldiers. He told them to fight the Mouse King’s army.

There was a big battle between the mice and the toy soldiers. At first, the toy soldiers were winning. But there were too many mice.

The Nutcracker found the Mouse King, and they had a duel. But the Mouse King was big and strong. The Nutcracker was no match for him.

Just as the Mouse King was about to kill the Nutcracker, he was hit in the head. Marie had thrown her slipper, and it had hit the Mouse King and killed him.

Without their king, the mice could not continue fighting. They carried the dead Mouse King back into the walls. With Marie’s help, the Nutcracker and the toy soldiers had won!

Because Marie had been very brave, the Nutcracker took her on a special journey. He took her to the Land of Dolls. There, she saw many wonderful and magical things.

The next morning, Marie woke up in her own bed. She saw the Nutcracker standing on her table. Marie asked, “Was that real, or was it a dream.” Then, the Nutcracker seemed to smile.
