Long ago, there was a man and his wife. One day, the man asked, “What shall we have for dinner?” His wife said, “I cannot cook. Our frying pan is broken.”

The man said to his wife, “Go to my mother’s house. You can borrow her frying pan.” The wife said, “You can go. It is not very far.”
Page 3
The man said, “If you go get the frying pan, I will take it back.” So, the wife went to borrow the frying pan. She returned, and she cooked a nice dinner.

After dinner, the wife said, “Now, you must take the frying pan to your mother’s house.” But the man said, “Let’s play a game, and the loser takes the pan back.”

The wife asked, “What is the game?” The man said, “We will be silent. The first person to speak must take the pan back.” The wife agreed. She thought it would be a fun game.

Later, a soldier came to the man’s house. He asked, “Are you a shoemaker?” The man did not answer. The soldier became a little bit angry.

Next, the soldier asked the wife, “Is that man a shoemaker? I need new shoes.” But the woman did not answer. The soldier became angrier.
