Once, there was a King. He had many sons. Some were very smart. And some were great soldiers. But only Tiet-Lieu was a farmer. Tiet-Lieu left the castle. He lived on his farm. He got married, and he had a son. He was very happy.

One day, the King called all of his sons. He wanted them to come to the castle. He had an announcement. When all of the sons arrived, the King said, “I am old now. I want one of you to become the new King.”

The King told his sons, “I want to eat a special food. Whoever brings the most special food to me will be the next King.” All of the sons went to find the most special food. Some of them went hunting. Some of them went fishing.

But Tiet-Lieu went home. He wanted to think about the best gift for the King. When Tiet-Lieu was in his field, he smelled his rice. It smelled very good. Tiet-Lieu made rice cakes with green beans. His son wrapped the rice cakes with leaves. Tiet-Lieu’s wife put the rice cakes in beautiful boxes.

When the other son’s saw Tiet-Lieu’s simple food, they laughed. People eat rice cakes every day. They are not special. But the King said, “These rice cakes are the most special food. Because they were made as a family, and they were made with love. Tiet-Lieu is the new King!”
