One late evening, many years ago, two men came to an inn. They rented a room, but even when it was time for bed, they stayed by the fire.
Page 2
The landlord and his servants went to sleep. But a maid stayed awake. She was worried because she did not trust the men by the fire.
Page 3
The maid hid in the kitchen, and watched the men by the fire. Soon, one man took out a wooden hand. He put the hand in the fire, and four fingers began to burn.
Page 4
One man said, “One person is still awake.” The other man said, “That is no problem. Let’s go and get the rest of the gang.” The two men went outside.
Page 5
While the two men were outside, the maid ran out of the kitchen. She locked the front door! Then, she went upstairs to wake up the landlord.
Page 6
The landlord would not wake up. Suddenly, she saw a thief’s face in the window. The thieves had a ladder! They were trying to come in through the window.
Page 7
The maid opened the window, and she knocked over the ladder. That slowed the thieves down again. The maid tried to wake up everyone, but no one would wake up.
