Many years ago, there were two brothers. One was named Masilo, and his younger brother was named Masilonyane. One day, they took their dogs, and they went hunting together.

While Masilo and Masilonyane were hunting, they found a ruined village. All of the buildings were old and falling down. Masilo did not want to enter the village, so he walked around. But Masilonyane was curious, so he went to the village.

In the village, Masilonyane found a lot of big pots. All of the pots were turned upside down. Masilonyane wondered what was under the pots, so he turned one of them over. Under the pot was an old woman, and she jumped onto Masilonyane’s back.

Masilonyane tried to get the old woman off of his back, but she would not let go. She only said, “You set me free, so you must carry me.” Masilonyane walked many miles with the old woman on his back.

Finally, Masilonyane had an idea. He said to the old woman, “Let me put you down so that I can hunt. If I can hunt, we can both eat.” So, the old woman let Masilonyane put her down. Then, Masilonyane told his dogs to attack the woman!

The woman said, “Wait! Do not let your dogs attack me. I will set you free, and I will give you a gift.” Masilonyane called his dogs back to him. Then, he said to the old woman, “You are safe now. Give me the give that you promised.”

The old woman took out a small knife, and she cut off her big toe. Out of the toe came twenty strong bulls, and one beautiful cow. The old woman said, “These are yours.” Masilonyane was very happy. But when Masilo saw the animals, he was jealous.
