Once upon a time, a mother duck was sitting on her four eggs. When the eggs hatched, there were three cute, yellow ducklings. There was also an ugly, gray duckling.

The gray duckling was bigger than the other little ducklings, and he was ugly! The mother duck thought the ugly duckling had been in his egg too long.

The ugly duckling’s mother and father were surprised. They looked at him closely. The mother duck said, “Maybe he will be handsome when he gets older.”

The father duck said, “It is time to learn to swim.” Then, he whispered to the mother duck, “Maybe the ugly one is a turkey. If he cannot swim, I will chase him away.”

All of the ducklings went to the lake, and they learned to swim. The mother and father duck were surprised. The ugly duckling swam better than all of the other ducklings!

The mother duck took all of her ducklings to meet the other ducks. All of the big ducks talked together, and all of the little, yellow ducklings played.

But none of the yellow ducklings played with the ugly duckling. They called him names, and they hurt him. The ugly duckling was very sad, and he ran away.

In the field, he saw a big dog. The dog was chasing all of the ducks. But the dog did not chase the ugly duckling. “It is because I am so ugly,” thought the ugly duckling.

The ugly duckling found an old house. In the house, an old woman lived with a cat and a chicken. But the cat and the chicken were very mean to the ugly duckling.

The ugly duckling said, “I love to swim.” But the chicken said, “I cannot swim. The cat cannot swim. So, you cannot swim.” And the cat said, “You are silly! No one can swim!”

The ugly duckling stayed with the mean chicken and cat through the winter. He did not have any other place to live. That winter, the ugly duckling was very unhappy.
