Long ago, a mother goat lived with her seven kids. One day, the mother goat went out. She said, “Be careful. The wolf might come while I am away, and he will eat you!”

As soon as the mother goat was gone, the wolf came to the door. He said, “I am your mother. Let me in, little kids, and I will give you some food.”

The little kids heard the wolf’s rough voice. One kid said, “You are not our mother! Our mother has a sweet, kind voice.”

The wolf had an idea. He went to a store, and he bought some syrup. He drank the syrup to make his voice sound sweet and kind.

The wolf returned, and he said, “Let me in. I am your mother.” But the kids saw the wolf’s dark hands in the window. One kid said, “Our mother has pretty, white hands.”

The wolf went to another store, and he covered his hands with white flour. He went back to the house. He said, “Let me in. I am your mother. I will give you cake!”

The little kids heard the sweet voice, and they saw the white hands. So they thought their mother had returned. They opened the door, and the wolf ran in!

All of the little kids found places to hide. One kid hid in the stove. Another hid under a basket. And another hid in a cupboard. They were all hiding, and they were all scared!

The wolf searched the house. He found the kids, and he gobbled them up! He had eaten six goat kids. Then, he heard the mother goat coming home, and he ran away.

The mother goat went into the house. It was a mess! She called her kids, but there was no answer. Then, she knew that the wolf had eaten her kids.
Page 11
The mother goat heard a soft, sobbing voice coming from a big chest. The voice said, “Is that really you, Mother?” It was her youngest kid. The wolf had not eaten him.
