Once, in the beautiful, green hills of Wales, lived a boy called Tommy Pritchard. Tommy was a happy boy who was always curious. Every day he walked to school past a big stone wall.

One day, Tommy was skipping along the road to school by the big stone wall. Suddenly, he thought he heard someone singing. He looked all around but no one was there. He still heard the singing, so he climbed up on the wall and looked over it.

On the other side of the wall, he saw a big stone. He lifted the stone, and there, underneath, was a bright, shiny sixpence. Tommy couldn’t believe his luck. He quickly put the sixpence in his pocket.

After that, every morning, on his way to school, he would scramble over the wall and look under the big stone. Every morning there was a bright, shiny sixpence there.

Every day after school, Tommy would take that bright, shiny sixpence to the nearby sweet -shop and buy himself some sweets.

Every day he ate lollies, gobstoppers and delicious, sweet, fruity candies.

Tommy’s father noticed that he always had sweets to eat and that he was going to the sweet-shop every day. He did not give Tommy money for sweets so he became worried that Tommy was stealing the money.

When Tommy came home from school his father was waiting for him. “Where are you getting the money to buy sweets every day?’ asked his father. “ I can’t tell you,” said Tommy. “Tell me!” demanded his father. “I can’t,” said Tommy, “it’s a secret.”

“I will make you tell me,” said his father and he started to beat Tommy on his behind. “Stop! Stop!” begged Tommy, but his father would not stop. In the end Tommy shouted, “I find a bright, shiny sixpence every day under a stone near the big wall.” His father was relieved that Tommy wasn’t stealing the money.

The next morning Tommy went to the big wall, scrambled over it and lifted the stone. There was nothing there but a cockle-shell.
