Treasure Island
A long time ago, in England, a man went into an inn. He met a boy named Jim, and he said, “I’m the captain of a ship, and I need your help.” The captain’s name was Billy Bones. He said, “A man with one leg is trying to find me. If you see him, tell me immediately!” Captain Bones looked afraid and nervous. That night, Captain Bones was in the inn’s restaurant. Some dangerous men came in, and Captain Bones ran to his room.

Later, Jim went to the captain’s room, and he knocked on the door. But Captain Bones did not answer. Jim and his mother went into the captain’s room, and they found him there. He was dead! “He must have died from fright,” said Jim’s mother. In the room, Jim and his mother found a chest. They opened it. They found some money, and an old notebook. Captain Bones had written many things about his life as a sailor. Jim read several pages. When he turned the next page, a map fell out.

The next day, Jim talked to a man named Doctor Livesey. Jim knew that the doctor was very smart and honest. He showed the treasure map to Doctor Livesey. “This is very interesting,” said the doctor. Then, he asked, “May I tell my friend about the map? He is rich, so he can buy a ship for us. He will help us find the treasure.” Jim was a bit nervous because he did not want many people to know about the treasure map. But he did need a ship, so he let Doctor Livesey contact his rich friend.

We need to find an honest captain, and sailors.” Doctor Livesey said, “I’ll come, too. I can take care of the sailors if they get sick or injured.” And Jim said, “We need a cook, too.”

The captain did not look happy. Captain Smollett talked to Jim, Doctor Livesey, and Mr. Trelawney quietly. “I don’t like this crew,” he said. “They don’t look honest.” Mr. Trelawney said, “We have to be very careful.”

One day, Jim saw a man on the ship who had only one leg. Jim remembered that Captain Bones was afraid of a man with one leg! Jim talked to the man. He asked, “What’s your name?” The man said, “My name is Long John Silver.” Then, Jim asked, “What do you do?” The man looked at Jim suspiciously for a second. Then, he smiled, and he said, “I’m the ship’s cook.”

A few days later, the ship was sailing on the sea. But Jim and his friends were very careful. Sometimes, Jim hid in a barrel, and he listened to the crew. One day, he heard three men talking. One of them was Long John Silver. They were making a secret plan. When the ship reached the island, they planned to take all of the treasure. And after that, they planned to take the ship and leave the captain and Mr. Trelawney behind! Long John Silver was a pirate!

Jim told this news to Captain Smollett, Doctor Livesey and Mr. Trelawney. Captain Smollett said, “There are 26 men on the ship.” Jim said, “I know three honest men.” And Doctor Livesey said, “We are four men, and Jim knows three more. Together we have seven men.” And Mr. Trelawney said, “So the pirates have 19 men.” Everybody was worried. Captain Smollett said, “We must pretend that we don’t know about their plan to take the treasure. If we’re lucky, we can surprise them and win!”

Soon, they found the island on the treasure map. Long John Silver said, “I want to go to the island.” And Captain Smollett said, “I’ll go to the island, too.” So, the crew used two boats. Long John Silver went with 14 men in one boat. Captain Smollett went with 10 men in another boat. Two men stayed on the ship. Doctor Livesey was in the boat with Mr. Trelawney and Captain Smollett. The doctor looked around, but he did not see Jim. Doctor Livesey said, “Oh, no! Jim’s in the boat with Long John Silver!”

Then, Jim said, “There is enough treasure for everyone. We can share!” But Long John Silver was angry when Jim said that. Long John Silver killed one man, and Jim ran into the jungle! Jim was hiding in the jungle, and he heard a scream. The pirates had killed the other man, too.

He said, “You’re not a pirate. You’re a boy.” And Jim said, “That’s right. I’m hiding from the pirates.” The man said, “My name is Ben Gunn, and I’m trapped on this island.” He said, “If you take me on your ship, I’ll help you beat the pirates and find the treasure.”

Captain Smollett, Doctor Livesey, and Mr. Trelawney were on the island, too. But they were far from Jim and Long John Silver. They were walking on the beach. Suddenly, they found a small fort. And then, they heard a man scream! They knew that Long John Silver had killed a man. Captain Smollett said, “Long John Silver and many of the men in his boat are pirates.” Then, he looked at his small crew, and he asked, “Are you pirates?” Everybody said, “No, we aren’t pirates!” Then, the captain said, “We’ll go into the fort. This time, there were too many pirates, so Captain Smollett’s men began to lose. So, Doctor Livesey surrendered the fort to Long John Silver. And Doctor Livesey said, “I’ll give the map to you, but I must take Captain Smollett to the ship.” Long John Silver was happy. He had the map! He took his men to find the treasure. Finally, they found a cave, and Long John Silver said, “The treasure is in that cave!” All of the pirates ran into the cave, but there was no treasure. Suddenly, the pirates heard people laughing. They turned around. They saw Jim, Mr. Trelawney, and Ben Gunn. Each of them had guns that they were pointing at the pirates. Long John Silver and the pirates were trapped, and they had to give up.
