Many, many years ago, the Creator was making the animals. It was Rabbit’s turn. Rabbit said to the Creator, ‘I want long legs and ears like Deer’s and sharp teeth and claws like Panther’s so I will be brave. The Creator began shaping Rabbit

Owl was waiting to be made. “Whoo, whoo! Make me a long neck like Swan’s and a lovely long beak like Stork’s, and a crown of beautiful feathers like Heron’s. Make me the most beautiful, the fastest and the best bird of all.”

The Creator said, “Please be quiet and look away. No one can watch me work.” But Owl did not listen. “Whoo whoo! I like watching you work, so I will,” said Owl.

The Creator became angry at Owl. “Look away I said, look away. Do not watch me work.” But still Owl watched.

The Creator grabbed Owl. He pushed owl’s head down onto his shoulders. Then he rubbed mud on him. He shook Owl until his eyes were big with fright. Next, he pulled Owl’s ears until they stuck up in the air.

“Will this make you learn?” asked the Creator. “Now you have big ears to hear when someone tells you something. Now you have big, wide eyes to see. But you will not be able to watch me because you will sleep all day. And your feathers will be gray like mud.”

Owl flew away. He was shaking with fear and crying. The Creator turned back to finish making Rabbit but Rabbit was afraid and he had run away

Rabbit was not finished. So today Rabbit has long ears, but only half of Rabbit’s legs are long like Deer’s. So, he has to hop everywhere. He did not get sharp teeth and claws like Panther’s, so Rabbit is afraid of everything.
