Hanukkah is a holiday celebrated by Jewish people all around the world. It lasts for eight days. During this holiday, Jewish people remember a miracle at the Holy Temple in Israel.
Page 2
Long ago, the Jewish people needed to light the Holy Temple. There was only enough blessed oil for one day, and the priests needed eight days to make more. The priests worked every day, and the little candle kept burning. It burned until they finished blessing the oil. It was a miracle!

Hanukkah is a holiday on the Jewish calendar, which is different from the one people use every day. Hanukkah is usually celebrated in December, but sometimes it is celebrated in November.

During Hanukkah, Jewish children light candles in a menorah. A menorah is a special candle-holder for Hanukkah. On the first day, children light one candle. On the second day, they light two candles. On the last day of Hanukkah, all eight of the special candles are lit.

Children also eat special doughnuts called “sufganiyot” during Hanukkah. These doughnuts are filled with jelly and covered with powdered sugar. Yummy!
Page 6
Children also spin special tops called dreidels. A dreidel is not round; it has four sides. On each side, there is a letter from the Hebrew alphabet. Hebrew is the original Jewish language, so it is very old!
Page 7
Each Hebrew letter on the dreidel is special. Together, the letters make the sounds “nes gadol hayah sham.” These sounds help Jewish children remember, “A great miracle happened in the Holy Temple.”

During Hanukkah, Jewish children get coins. These coins are called “Hanukkah gelts.” Sometimes, the coins are real money. Sometimes, they are pieces of chocolate that are wrapped in gold foil.
