Once, there was a boy. His father told him to take 10 donkeys to the town. His father said, “If you lose a donkey, I will be very angry.”

The boy gathered the 10 donkeys. Then, he got onto one of the donkeys. He rode one donkey, and the other 9 donkeys followed.

While the boy was going to the town, he became worried. He did not want to lose any donkeys because his father would be angry.

The boy stopped, and he counted all of the donkeys behind him. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. The boy said, “Oh, no! I can only see nine donkeys. I’ve lost one!”

The boy got down from his donkey. Then, he counted again. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. The boy said, “Now, I have 10! Great! I found the lost donkey!”

The boy got back onto his donkey. Then, he rode a little further. But he began to worry again.

The boy turned around, and he counted. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. The boy said, “Oh, no! One donkey has gotten lost again!”

The boy got down from his donkey. He searched beside the road. He looked in the tall grass, and he looked behind the trees. He did not see the lost donkey.

The boy went back to the road, and he counted the donkeys again. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. The boy said, “Now, there are 10 donkeys again!”

The boy realized that one donkey disappeared every time he got on his donkey’s back. So, to make sure no donkeys disappeared again, he walked the long, long way to the town.
