Hodja Nasreddin
Page 1
Once upon a time, there was an old man named Hodja Nasreddin. He was very wise. But he was also a little silly.
Page 2
Hodja always rode his donkey backwards. Why? Because he wanted to see the faces of the people behind him.
Page 3
One day, Hodja went to the market.
Page 4
He saw a parrot and asked, “How much?” The merchant said, “This parrot costs 10 gold coins.”
Page 5
Hodja said, “That’s expensive!” Then, the merchant said, “This parrot is special. It can talk like a person!” This gave Hodja an idea.

Hodja went straight home, and grabbed his chicken. He took his chicken to the bazaar.

“Chicken for sale,” Hodja said. “20 gold coins!”
Page 8
Everybody laughed. Hodja said, “Why are you laughing? My chicken is bigger than that little parrot.” Everybody said, “That parrot is special. It can talk like a person.”

Then Hodja continued, “Chicken for sale. 20 gold coins!” People kept laughing, and they said, “Your chicken cannot talk. What is special about it?”
Page 10
Hodja jokingly said, “My chicken cannot talk, but it can think!” What Hodja meant was people should not spend money on things they do not need.
