The Two Brothers
Page 1
Once upon a time there were two brothers, Jacob and Tom. Jacob was older than Tom. They lived in a small village and they were very poor.

They decided to leave the village and search for wealth and happiness. They went from town to town, village to village, but they did not find what they were looking for.

One day, on a long, winding road they met an old man carrying a very large sack. “Good day to you,” said the old man, lifting his hat. “Good day, old man,” said the brothers.

“Where are you heading on this beautiful day?” asked the old man. “We are searching for wealth and happiness,” said the older brother. “Maybe I can help you,” said the old man. “Which one of you wants these?” He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out some gold coins.

“I want them,” said Jacob and he grabbed the coins from the old man’s hand. “Will you not share them with your brother?” asked the old man. “No, I am the eldest,” said Jacob. “I should get them.”

“So your brother can have this,” said the old man. He reached into his other pocket and pulled out a beautiful diamond. “I want that too,” said Jacob and he quickly grabbed the diamond from the man’s hand.

Then the old man put down the big, heavy sack he was carrying. “Who will help me carry this sack to the village?” asked the old man. Jacob was looking at the big diamond in his hand and he said nothing.

Tom said, “I will carry it for you.” And he bent down to pick up the sack. “Thank you,” said the old man, smiling at the younger brother. “I will give you everything that is in the sack.”

“Oh no,” said Tom. “That is not necessary.” “Please, I want you to have it,” said the old man. “It is my gift to you.”
Page 10
Tom opened the sack and he could not believe his eyes. It was full of big, beautiful gemstones of every colour. “I cannot accept these,” he said. “You can, and you must,” said the old man. “They are my gift to you.”
