Dorothy lived on a farm with her family and her dog, Toto. One day, a cyclone came. It picked up Dorothy’s house, and it carried Dorothy and Toto far away. When the cyclone put down the house, Dorothy opened the door. She saw a strange and colorful land. Suddenly, little people ran to her. They all were asking, “What have you done?” Dorothy looked at the bottom of the house. She saw two feet under it!

Dorothy said, “I’m sorry! It was an accident!” But then, everybody cheered. One of the little people said, “Don’t be sorry. She was very bad. She was the Wicked Witch of the East!” Then, a beautiful woman floated down from the sky. She was Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. Glinda said, “Because you killed the Wicked Witch of the East, I will give you a gift. You can have these silver shoes.”

Dorothy said to Glinda, “I want to go home. Can you help me?” Glinda told Dorothy that she had to speak to the Wizard of Oz. He lived in the Emerald City, far away. Dorothy asked, “How do I find him?” Glinda showed a road to Dorothy. She said, “This is the Yellow Brick Road. It goes to the Emerald City. You will find the Wizard there.”

Dorothy walked with Toto on the Yellow Brick Road. While she was walking, she met a scarecrow, a man made of tin, and a lion. They were all very friendly, but they were also a little bit sad. The Scarecrow said, “I don’t have a brain. I only have straw in my head.” The Tin Man said, “I don’t have a heart. My body is empty inside.” And the Lion said, “I’m big and strong, but I’m afraid of everything. I’m a coward! I don’t want to be a coward.”

Dorothy told her new friends that she would help them. She said, “I’ll ask the Wizard of Oz to give a brain to you, Scarecrow. And I’ll ask him to give you a heart, Tin Man. And for you, Lion, I’ll ask him to give courage.” Everybody was happy, and they walked on the Yellow Brick Road together. They were excited to meet the Wizard of Oz!

Sometimes, the Yellow Brick Road was dangerous. There were wild animals. And the road was broken in places. And at one point, a big river crossed the road. It was a very difficult trip for Dorothy and her friends. But they helped each other, and they used their special skills. By working together, they were able to overcome the problems.

After Dorothy and her friends crossed the big river, they saw a field of flowers. The flowers had a beautiful smell, but they were dangerous. The smell of the flowers made you sleep. If you fell asleep in the flower field, you would never wake up again. Dorothy said, “If we run as fast as we can, maybe we can reach the other side before we fall asleep.” So, Dorothy and her friends ran through the flower field, but soon, Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion fell asleep. Luckily, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man never slept, so they carried their friends out of the flower field. The Scarecrow and the Tin Man saved their friends!

When everybody was awake, they began walking again. Soon, they saw the beautiful Emerald City! They went to a giant door and rang a bell. A man opened the door and asked, “What do you want?” Dorothy said that they wanted to see the Wizard of Oz. The man said that the Wizard was very busy. But Dorothy said that she had to see the Wizard. “It’s very important,” she said. So, the man took Dorothy and her friends to see the Wizard of Oz.

The Wizard of Oz was scary! He yelled, “I’m very busy! What do you want?” The Scarecrow said, “I want a brain.” The Tin Man said, “I want a heart.” The Lion said, “I want courage.” And Dorothy said, “I want to go home.” Then, the Wizard said, “Why do you ask me to give these things to you?” Dorothy and her friends said, “Because you’re the great Wizard of Oz, and only you can help us!” The Wizard said, “I’ll help you, but first, you must kill the Wicked Witch of the West!”

Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion went to find the Wicked Witch of the West. But the Wicked Witch knew that they were coming, so she tried to stop them! She sent wolves, crows, and bees to fight them. But Dorothy and her friends beat them all. Then, the Wicked Witch sent her soldiers. Dorothy and her friends beat them, too! Finally, the Wicked Witch sent flying monkeys. At last, the flying monkeys beat Dorothy’s friends. The flying monkeys broke the Scarecrow and the Tin Man. Then, they took Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion to the Wicked Witch.

The Wicked Witch of the West locked Dorothy in a room. She wanted Dorothy’s silver slippers. But when she tried to take the slippers, Dorothy threw water on her! Suddenly, the Wicked Witch began to disappear. She yelled, “I’m melting! I’m melting!” When the Wicked Witch was gone, Dorothy looked at the soldiers. She said, “I’m sorry! It was an accident!” But the soldiers were happy. They said, “The Wicked Witch was very bad! She made us do bad things. Thank you for helping us!”

The soldiers and the flying monkeys wanted to help Dorothy. Dorothy asked them to take her to the Scarecrow and the Tin Man. So, they took Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion to their friends. With the help of the soldiers and the flying monkeys, Dorothy and the Lion fixed the Scarecrow and the Tin Man. Soon, all of Dorothy’s friends were together again, and they could continue their adventure.

Dorothy and her friends went back to the Wizard of Oz. They told him that they had killed the Wicked Witch of the West. So, the Wizard gave a brain to the Scarecrow. He gave a heart to the Tin Man. And he gave courage to the Lion. Dorothy’s three friends were very happy. Then, Dorothy asked, “What about me and Toto? You promised to help us go home.” The Wizard said, “Yes, I did! And I will! I’m going to take you home in my hot air balloon.”
Page 14
Dorothy, Toto, and the Wizard of Oz were in the hot air balloon. But when the balloon began to float into the sky, Toto jumped out! Dorothy jumped out, too! She could not leave Toto in Oz. She wanted to save her little dog. The Wizard was upset. He said, “I can’t stop the balloon. I can only follow the wind. I can’t come back to get you now!” Dorothy sadly watched the Wizard fly away in his hot air balloon. Dorothy was trapped in Oz; she could not go home!

Dorothy was sad because she wanted to go home. The Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion were sad too. This time, they could not help Dorothy. Suddenly, Glinda, the Good Witch of the North appeared. Glinda said, “Your silver slippers are magical. You can use them to go home.” Dorothy was very happy to hear this news! So, she said goodbye to her friends. Then, she picked up Toto, and she said, “I wish we were home.” Suddenly, Dorothy was home with her family. And she told them all about the Wonderful Land of Oz!
