One winter day, a man was walking by a lake. Some of the lake was covered with ice. Suddenly, a carp jumped out of the water. The man saw him jump out of the water again and again. The man wondered why the carp was jumping.

"The man looked at the ice. Near where the carp was jumping, there was a small cracker. The carp wanted the cracker. The carp jumped again. Then, he tried to break the ice under the cracker.

"The carp cut himself on the ice. And he hurt his head when he hit the ice. But he never stopped trying. Sometimes, the ice would break a little bit. Then, the carp would be closer to the cracker.

The man saw blood in the water. He thought the carp was dead because he did not jump for a few minutes. But then, the carp jumped again! The carp was hurt, and he was very tired. But he kept trying. Finally, he got the cracker! The carp took the cracker, and he happily swam away

The man thought about what he had seen, and he learned a lesson. He wanted to be a painter, but he was not very good. So he had given up. The man went back to his teacher. He said, “I will be a painter, or I will die trying!” The man’s name was Rosetsu, and he became a great painter in Japan.
