Plunk often said, “It is a terrible life! What I catch in the morning, I eat up at night. Plunk was too poor to even buy a decent hook. He always used a fish bone as his hook.

Plunk dreamed of the rich people he had heard tales about. He always felt envy when he heard the stories of men of wealth and power.

More and more, Plunk wanted to escape his poor life as a fisherman. More and more, he wanted to become a rich man.

One day, Plunk had an idea. He decided to take his boat into the ocean. But he would not fish or eat. He would try that for three days.

Plunk sat in his boat in the ocean for three days. He never fished, and he did not eat. Then, at last, a golden boat appeared, and the Dawn-Maiden spoke to Plunk.

The Dawn-Maiden said, “For three days, you did not fish or eat. You have spared many fish. Now, I will give you a gift. Go home, Plunk. You will find what you need there.”
