Page 1
One time, in a town in a valley, a flood came. The flood washed away the town’s only bridge.
Page 2
The town’s people told the Carpenter to build a new bridge. The people said, “You must build our new bridge before Autumn. We must sell the vegetables from our farms.”
Page 3
The Carpenter did not know how to build bridges. He only built houses and barns and fences. But he did not have a choice. He had to build the bridge.

Autumn was coming soon. The Carpenter was worried. He could see the Farmers working in their gardens every day.
Page 5
On the day before Autumn, he tried to build a bridge. He worked late into the night, but the bridge kept falling down. The Carpenter sat down, and he began to cry.
Page 6
Suddenly, the Devil appeared. He said to the Carpenter, “I will build the bridge for you. But you must give me the first soul that crosses the new bridge.”
Page 7
The Carpenter did not have a choice. He promised to The give the Devil the first soul that would cross the new bridge.
Page 8
The next day, the bridge was finished. All of the Farmers began to cross the bridge, and the Devil waited. Then, the Carpenter stopped the Farmers, and he crossed the bridge!
Page 9
The Devil was happy to take the Carpenter’s soul. But, before the Carpenter reached the other side, he pushed a goat into the Devil’s arms.
Page 10
The Carpenter said, “There is your soul, Devil. You will have none of ours!” The Devil had been tricked! He had no choice; the Devil had to take the goat and go away.
