The Fairies Mint

Once upon a time, there was a hard–working miller. He lived in Anglesey. He had a fine working mill. All through the day the mill’s great sails turned as the miller made flour from grain.
Page 2
Early one morning, he went to the mill as usual to start his long day of work. As he looked around, he noticed that some of his sacks appeared to have been moved. He looked around and scratched his head in wonder. He thought perhaps he was mistaken.
Page 3
The next morning however, he looked at his grain store and felt certain that some of his grain had been disturbed. He looked around but could not find any explanation for it. Again, he thought he must be mistaken.

The very next day however, he was sure that someone had been in his mill when he was not there. He went off to tell his trusted friend. They decided to go to the mill that very night and see what was happening.

That night, they waited until it was very dark except for the light of the big moon and they headed for the mill. The mill stood on a bare hill. They were surprised to see the mill all lit up and working in the dark night. The great sails of the mill were turning.

They went closer and crept softly to a small window. The miller and his friend looked in and to their great surprise they saw a large group of little men carrying small bags and emptying them into the millstones.
Page 7
They could not see what was in the bags so they crept quietly to another window. There they saw golden coins coming out of the mill from the same place the flour usually came out.

Immediately, the miller went to the mill door to unlock it. As soon as he put the key in the lock, all the lights went off and the great sails stopped turning. As he and his friend went inside, they could hear people running around. But by the time they put the lights back on, there was no one to be seen.

Scattered all around the floor of the mill were cockle-shells.

Many people said later that they had seen the mill lit up at night with the sails turning. The old miller stayed away at night and left the fairies alone to make their gold coins.
