Once upon a time, there was a farmer. One morning, he walked into his field. In the field, the farmer saw a devil. The devil was sitting on a big bag of gold.

The devil said to the farmer, “You must become my partner. I want half of what you grow.” The farmer asked, “What do I get by being your partner?” The devil said to the farmer, “You can have this gold. But I get half of what you grow.” The farmer said, “OK. Which half do you want?” The devil said, “I want the top half of everything!”

That year, the farmer planted turnips. When the devil came, he took all of the leaves. He tried to sell the leaves, but nobody would buy them. But the farmer sold all of his turnips! The devil said to the farmer, “You tricked me! Next time, I want the bottom half of everything!”

The next year, the farmer planted wheat. When the devil came, the farmer had already cut all of the wheat. The devil took all of the roots. The farmer and the devil went to the market together. Again, the farmer sold everything, but the devil sold nothing!

The devil laughed. He said, “You tricked me two times. You are very clever. I must end our partnership before you trick me again!” The devil gave the farmer a big bag of gold. Then, the devil said “Goodbye,” and he disappeared. And the farmer lived happily ever after.
