The Little Dutch Boy
Page 1
Holland is a wonderful country, with tulips and windmills, and beautiful buildings. Hans and Liesa were two children who lived in this pretty country.
Page 2
Holland is beautiful, but it is always in danger from the sea. That is why there are walls around the country; to keep the sea out. These walls are called dikes.
Page 3
One day, Hans and Liesa were walking by a dike. They were laughing and playing and picking tulips.
Page 4
Suddenly, clouds came in from across the sea. There were strong winds, and big waves. The waves were hitting the dike very hard.
Page 5
Hans and Liesa were about to run home, but then Hans noticed something; there was a hole in the dike, and a crack. And the crack was growing!
Page 6
Hans quickly ran over, and he put his finger in the hole. That stopped the water from coming through.
Page 7
“Nice work, Hans!” said Liesa. “Now, I will run to town. I will bring people to fix the dike.”
Page 8
Hans was worried. There was still some water coming through the hole. And the crack was getting bigger and bigger.
Page 9
When Hans thought the dike was about to break, he heard the voices of grown-ups from the town. They had come to fix the dike!
Page 10
Hans and Liesa were heroes! They saved the town, and all the townspeople were very grateful.
