The Old Man and the Fairies (Welsh)
Page 1
Long, long ago in the beautiful mountains of Wales, there lived many fairies. When the moon was bright in the night sky, people would go to watch the fairies dancing. They knew where they danced by green rings in the grass.
Page 2
In those days, fairs were held all across the mountains, where people bought and sold daily wares, animals and food. The fairs were exciting and colourful.

There was an old man who travelled to many fairs. One day, as he was travelling to a fair, he went through a long, lonely valley. He sat down and put down his bag, then he took a long drink of cold, fresh mountain water. He was very tired and he soon fell asleep.

When he was fast asleep some fairies came and carried him and his bag away. They took him deep under the ground.

When he woke up he was in a great palace. He was surrounded by gold. Fairies danced and sang around him.
Page 6
They took him and showed him everything. There was a splendid room of gold. There was a beautiful garden full of every fruit and flower the man had ever known. The fairies danced around him until he fell asleep again.
Page 7
They carried him back to the spot where they had found him. When the man woke up he thought he must have been dreaming. He looked around for his bag but when he found it he could barely lift it. He opened it and saw that it was full of gold.

He summoned all his strength to carry the bag and he went home. When he got there his wife Kaddy said, “Why haven’t you been to the fair?” “Look what I have,”said the man, opening the bag, “it’s gold.” “Where did you get that?” Kaddy demanded to know. But the man would not tell her, for he knew the fairies liked you to keep their secrets.

Kaddy asked and asked but the man refused to tell. He put the gold in a box under the bed. But Kaddy would not stop asking him where it had come from and in the end the man told her about the fairies.

The next morning, when he woke up he thought he would go to a fair and buy lots of things. Food, jewels for Kaddy and fine clothes. So he went to the box under the bed to take out some gold. The gold was gone and the box was full of cockle-shells.
