Once, there was a man named Awoto Fujitsuna. He was a very honest man, and he worked for the local ruler. One day, Awoto was carrying a bag of Japanese money. The money was called “yen.” When Awoto was walking across a bridge, he tripped and fell.

Awoto dropped the bag of yen. Luckily, only one coin fell off of the bridge. Awoto gathered the coins, and he put them in the bag. Then, he went to look for the one-yen coin. But he could not find the small coin.

Because evening was coming, he went to the town. He said, “I have lost your ruler’s money. I will give you 30 yen of my money. Please help me.” A lot of people came to help. People looked all around the bridge. They searched for many hours. But they did not find any money.

Evening was coming. Awoto was worried. When it got dark, nobody could find the missing coin. Suddenly, a farmer said, “I have found a one-yen coin!” Awoto was very happy. He said, “Thank you. Now, I have all of the missing coins. Here is your 30 yen.”

The people were shocked. One woman said, “You gave us 30 yen for a one-yen coin.” Then, the people thought Awoto was foolish. They began to laugh. Awoto said, “My job was to bring the ruler’s money to him. If I did not do that, then I would have failed. It is important to do a good job, and to do it honestly.”
