Once upon a time, there were four little rabbits. Three of them were sisters. Their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail. They had one brother named Peter. They all lived with their mother under the root of a very big tree.

One day, their mother said, “You may play outside today. But do not go into Mr. McGregor’s garden. It is a very dangerous place.” The little rabbits were happy that they were able to play outside, and they hopped around the house excitedly.

Mrs. Rabbit buttoned the jackets of each little rabbit. And the little rabbits put on their slippers. Mrs. Rabbit said, “Go outside and play now. And don’t get into trouble.” Then all of the little rabbits went outside to play. They ran around in all directions, and soon, they were out of sight.

Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella. She watched as her children hopped off to play. Then, she went through the woods to the baker’s shop. She was going shopping. She wanted to buy a loaf of bread and five currant buns.

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail found some blackberry bushes. They picked blackberries together. Flopsy said, “These blackberries will be perfect for pies.” And Mopsy said, “They will also be great for jam.” Cotton-tail said, “Mother will be happy to have these!” But Peter was a bad little rabbit. His mother had said not to go to Mr. McGregor’s farm, but that is exactly where he went. He ran straight to the farm, and he went under the gate.

In Mr. McGregor’s farm, Peter ate a lot. He ate some lettuce, some green beans and some radishes. But he ate too much, and his stomach began to hurt. He walked around Mr. McGregor’s farm to find some parsley, He wanted to eat it to make his stomach feel better. Peter walked around a corner, and he saw Mr. McGregor!

Mr. McGregor jumped up, and he chased Peter. Peter was afraid! Mr. McGregor yelled, “Stop, thief!” Peter ran around the garden. He did not want to get caught by Mr. McGregor! Peter ran so fast that he got lost, and his shoes fell off. One shoe fell off in the cabbages, and the other one fell off in the potatoes.

Peter ran and ran. He almost got away, but he fell into a net made of string. His legs were tangled, and a button on his blue jacket was caught! Peter was all wrapped up in the net, and he thought, “I can never get free quickly enough to get away.” Peter had given up! Then, some small birds came and cheered for Peter. “Come on, Peter,” they said. “Don’t give up!”

Peter escaped just in time because Mr. McGregor was going to put a bucket on top of him. Peter ran away, but his blue jacket had fallen off. Peter ran into the barn, and he looked around for a place to hide. Then, he found a big can. It was a nice place to hide, but it was full of cold water. Peter climbed inside, and he stayed as quiet as he could.

Mr. McGregor came into the barn, and he began to look for Peter. Mr. McGregor looked under the flower pots. He turned over two flower pots one at a time. Then, he heard a small noise. Peter had sneezed! Peter had to run again because Mr. McGregor had found him! He jumped out of the can, and he ran around the bard with Mr. McGregor chasing him.

Peter jumped through a small window, and he quickly ran away. Mr. McGregor was too big to go through the window, so he gave up. He stopped chasing Peter because he was very tired. He went back to where he had been before, and he began to work in the garden again.

Peter rested in the garden. He was tired, wet, cold, and very scared. Also, he was lost. He did not know where the garden gate was. He looked around carefully, but he could not see it from where he was. He hopped around slowly and carefully. He was trying to find the gate.

Then, Peter saw Mr. McGregor again. Mr. McGregor was working in the onions. Behind Mr. McGregor, Peter saw the gate! Peter thought, “If I run as fast as I can, then I can make it to the gate!”. So, he ran and ran. Mr. McGregor saw him, and he chased Peter. Peter saw Mr. McGregor stand up, so Peter ran as fast as he could go! Right before Mr. McGregor could catch him, Peter ran under the gate! Soon. he was in the woods, free and safe! But still, Peter ran all the way home.

Peter was safe, but he was also sick. When he had hidden in the can in the barn, he had caught a cold. That evening, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail had delicious bread, milk, and currant buns for dinner. But Peter had to take some medicine and go straight to bed. Because Peter had been bad, all he could do was watch his sisters enjoy their wonderful meal.
