Long ago, a soldier was walking on a road. He saw three men carrying shovels. The soldier asked, “Where are you going?” One of the men said, “We are going to dig up a dead man.”
Page 2
The soldier asked the men, “Why do you want to dig up the dead man?” One of the men said, “He owes us three gold coins, so we will sell his bones for money.”
Page 3
The soldier said, “A dead man should rest in peace. I have three gold coins. They are all I have, but you can have them.” So, the men took the soldier’s coins, and they went away.

That night, the soldier saw an old man. The old man said, “I will help you to become a rich man. Follow me.” The soldier followed the old man.

The old man took the soldier to a stone tower. He said, “Inside this tower is a princess. A troll put her inside; she is his prisoner! I will kill the troll, and you can marry the princess.”
Page 6
The troll ran out of the tower. He said, “Do you think you can kill me, old man?” The old man answered, “Yes, I do. I will kill you and flatten you with a giant rock.”
Page 7
The troll became angry. He said, “You cannot flatten me, old man. You are too weak!” But the old man said, “Yes, I will flatten you. Then, I will cut you up.”
Page 8
The troll began to jump up and down. He said to the old man, “You cannot cut me up!” But the old man said, “I will cut you up and I will feed you to the chickens!”
Page 9
Suddenly, the troll became so angry that he turned into stone! The soldier took the princess out of the tower, and they fell in love. The soldier thanked the old man.
Page 10
The old man said to the soldier, “I helped you because you gave all of your money to help me. Now, I really can rest in peace.” Then, the old man smiled and faded away to nothing.
